Chosen Answer:

not sure exactly what you are trying to do.. but if you are running a local mail server at home and also have a website at say foobar.com and you want to use foobar.com for emails like johnsmith@foobar.com then you would have to forward port 25 and port 110 to your local server.. and also setup the config file for your mail server.. you would also have to edit your DNS entries and add your IP address for your local mail servers.. so mail routes through say 24.24.24.24 (or whatever your IP address is through your ISP)
I want to know which webhost will be the best since I have many webpages and will be requiring a lot of web space. Will I need to opt for a server plan or the ordinary. Please give as much info. as you can. I am confused…. Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

http://www.1and1.com

They are AWESOME! I used them for my podcast until i found an alternate route. They are really professional, and offer TONS of services. I reccomend this host to everyone looking for a professional service that offers upgrades and everything. Space is good too, and same with bandwidth. Check out the options, and if you wanna include PHP, go with the linux hosting options, as MS doesn’t quite have that down yet, and don’t work.

Hosting costs will be different since this is not slot based like fps games. Anyone know how much bandwidth a 2d game like this will take for 1k users on at the same time consistently for a month? thx

Chosen Answer:

I host many games. I run 2 linux servers from my house.

Most people are surprised at how little it takes. An old computer that wont work for a desktop machine makes a great server. Most of your creative work will get done by logging in from your machine at home so the graphics/sound requirements can be turned way down. It will look ugly and sound ugly at the console but who cares. It will still work great for the users.

And a 1000 active users shard tends to mean maybe a dozen on at one time. That can actually run off of a home DSL line without you even noticing the lag on your own machine. Then when you have grown enough to actually NEED more bandwidth you can expand your DSL (if you are close enough to a pop for higher dsl settings) or you can purchase a co-locate hosting (your machine at the ISP buildings macine room) which tends to provide fantastic bandwidth.

My 2 servers each have over a hundred email accounts, a dozen domains, and host online worlds (not a shard but I am an officer on a home run shard so I know something of that also)

Okay, so I have a server that I’m hosting a website on, and I have 2 NIC cards installed in it, I had an idea to improve the efficiency of my network by setting only certain tasks to each card, like I want one to handle all of my LAN tasks like file sharing, printing, etc and the other NIC card to handle my website and inbound tasks like HTTP, FTP, MySQL

How can I do this?

Chosen Answer:

usually you can’t
Windows usually picks one interface for network traffic, and sends all of it there.

To do what you want, you could do it with a high end router/firewall, like some Linux firewalls. Those allow you to route the network traffic by protocol or by destination port (like all port 80 to the web – use one NIC).
As for incoming, you could do the same, but all traffic would go to the one server anyway, so either NIC would work for incoming traffic – there’s nothing to direct or redirect. It’s just outgoing that you can set which NIC to use. However, you woul only need one NIC from the server to the firewall, and have the firewall use two output NICs, and direct traffic that way.

For those of you with Linux based web servers, you may be able to do the traffic shaping via some routing software on the server itself, maybe even with IPTables.

I know this question is trite — but I want to register a specific domain name and continually post content to it (its going to be a sports reporting site).
I intend to host a lot of pictures, and have a message board to complement the page.

I am interested in the following things:
(1) Who should I register my domain with?
(2) Do I need to get someone to host my website after I’ve registered? If so, who should I go with (just one domain, modest space, email not really necessary, and preferably not TOO expensive)
(3) How should I build my page?
(4) What are the best ways to derive revenue for web pages that aren’t too intrusive to the website itself?

Thanks in advance!

Chosen Answer:

How to List a Domain Name

There are two principal steps to make your website on the internet and registering/booking a domain name is the number one.
A domain name builds the address of your site and can end in . com, . net, . org, . info, . us, . biz, . tv and further.

Directly afer you have registered your name, you will pick a web host (2nd step). The web host is the guts of any website as this is where you build and publish your pages, build purchase fillings, insert service and preserve your site.

How to Select the Best Domain Name

If being in the foremost search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, etc. ) is tremendously essential to you, I extremely urge you index a name that includes your major keywords as an alternative of your enterprise name.

Imagine about it. The normal visitor searches by theme, not by correct name. So why it may seem cool to have a name corresponding Jack’sLinux. com, you’ll wish to select a name that contains keywords that your intended spectators would likely use when they search.

So with that in thinking, a name like Begin-using-Linux. com would be much enhanced than Jack’sLinux. com. Sure, you can still list your corporation name on your web pages, but I think it’s more important to make sure the domain name consist of your eminent “search friendly” keywords if you want to receive traffic from all over.

No doubt, you can still register your firm name on the web site some area, but your domain name will consist of all the significant keywords you’ll want to be found with.

How to Register a Domain Name

Ordering a domain name is easy and very budget pleasant. You don’t need to compensate per year like you would if you listed with big companies.

I’ll illustrate you how to save a bundle at www.domain-name-register-store.com – and you’ll pick up admirable client help desk that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The big name companies cost silly rates such as -35/year for an individual domain name, and you gain the matching feature at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com for 60% or even less.

How to Profit Online with Parked Domain Names

Making money online from parked domain names seems to be an unfamiliar concept to many people. The concept is simple:

1. You register a domain name. (my recommendation http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/)

2. Then park the domain name to a domain parking company. (Free with every domain name at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/)

3. The domain parking company will create a parked page for your domain. name with sponsored ads, links and search box inside the parked page. Some domain parking services even will add relevant articles and content to the parked page.

4. You earn ad revenue for the traffic generated by you to the parked domain. Some domain parked services will share ad revenue with you and some allow you to display your AdSense ads and keep 100% of the AdSense commission earn.

So make your move NOW!

Good Luck,

Hello,
Help please!
I am using XAMPP for my website. My website is almost ready now to publish. It is working fine in localhost. Now I would like to make it online (public). And, this is my main OBSTACLE.
I have already bought a domain. I want to host it on my computer which have windows server 2008r2 installed. However, I am getting a problem to publish it online. I have no further idea how to do. This is my first ever website. Hope some of you could help me. I would greatly appreciate your step-by-step suggestion.
Please send me step by step configuration method.
Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Well you need linux hosting, not Windows.

Here are some good web hosting:

1. http://www.webguruambala.com/Hostgator-webhosting
2. http://www.webguruambala.com/godaddy-domain-registration
3. http://www.webguruambala.com/blue-host-discount

Choose any of them, after you need to upload your stuff to their server. You can either use FTP or Online file manager.
Download Filezilla and enter ftp details of your hosting account that your hosting company will provide.

I have a website on a host that is going out of business. I did a back up of the site with cpanel and saved it and it shows the extension of tar.gz. I now have a new host with cpanel and was wondering how to get my site to the new host? The site was ecommerce and had SSL …will that be in the back up or do I need new SSL? Any help in getting this done is appreciated?

Chosen Answer:

Tutorial: Move a Website to a New Server – The Seamless Way: http://www.elated.com/articles/move-website-to-new-server-the-seamless-way/

Unzip it into a common folder on your hard drive. Log into your new hosting server and upload the entire site with one drag and drop via FTP. If done correctly, the site should work fine. You need to keep a MIRRORED image of your online site on your hard drive anyway. Next time you will not have to have it zipped. Plus, it’s easier to edit locally and upload/overwrite the pages.
