I intend to register a Domain Name and have webhosting through dotster.com.
I plan on purchasing the whois privacy, and the email option, but I don’t know what else I should consider.
Domain name, covered. Hosting – Covered. Web design tool, covered. (Linux/NVU)
Is there anything else I should consider before signing up for the hosting?
I guess I don’t want to start web hosting, then discover I didn’t pay for/set up an intregal part of the picture.
Any suggestions will be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
I will choose a best answer. Promise.
Chosen Answer:
I just checked hosting plans on Dotster. They are too expensive for what they offer. I guess you’ll choose either Starter (.40/year – 5GB Disk Space, 250 GB Bandwidth) or Standard plan (7.40/year – 10GB Disk Space, 500 GB Bandwidth) but they offer to little for the price. I recommend Dreamhost. Check their plan here: http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html
Their price is 9.40 but you can use the promo code PLUS at signup page and get the discount + 2 Free Domain Names. (with free whois privacy included).
So you get 2 Free Domain Names, 500 GB Disk Space, 5000 GB Bandwidth, Unlimited domains and Mysql databases and a lot more for .40 (.78/month).
Dreamhost allows you to host unlimited number of domains on a single account, so it’s very easy to add a couple of more sites, as you come up with some new ideas.
P.S. If you want to activate Google Apps for your domain (you get a Gmail interface but with your domain names in this format: something@yourdomain.com) leave the Google Apps option checked, and Dreamhost will set it up for you automatically.
P.P.S. As for your question you’ve got everything covered, although you might need an FTP client. I recommend Filezilla. It’s free and open source.

I’m sure dotster has php/mysql support, but you definitely want to verify that first.
Ist doster providing DNS (Domain Name Services) for you?
I’m talking domain name resolution, not the actual registration of the domain name… you have to have a DNS service to point your “www.domainname.com” to the correct IP address of the server(s) actually hosting the domain. (Usually provided by either the registrar or the hosting service, but make sure)
Other than that, sounds like everything is covered.
