What is the difference between a Linux web host or windows web host?

When setting up a web site.
Which is better and why?

Chosen Answer:

More stability, uptime and security under Linux.

Probably easier for most users using Windows, but less secure and more vulnerabilities.

Linux if you work it out my friend.

It doesn’t matter what the web server OS is. There are problems running ASP on Linux but it can be done. FrontPage Extensions can also be made to work on a Linux server. PHP can run on Windows web servers.

As I said, it doesn’t matter at all what the server OS is at all, what matters is how the web server software is set up and what server side language support has been added, if any.

I’ve got both Windows and Linux web servers and neither has been compromised – although plenty of people have tried.

Linux is better for php & MySql, whereas Windows is better for asp. Reason: Php & MySql are open source like Linux & asp is a Microsoft technology.

BTW 80% of webservers around the world are Apache & Linux based.
I suggest that you opt for any low cost shared hosting like http://www.webhostingpad.com/2093.html. Everything unlimited & for $3 something, you also get a domain free for life, so no need to pay $10 each year. You will find everything unlimited here at a very low price. I myself have 13 websites hosted here under one account. Not only are they cheap but are reliable & have a great support team. You can read a review here: http://hostingwebsitecoupons.com/webhostingpad

Next you would need to install any Open Source web CMS like Joomla (Maximum websites in the world ever are hosted using joomla), WordPress, Drupal etc. This site would help you with instant install. Its damn simple. Next you need to read free tutorials & simply work through the interface on your chosen web CMS. If U are looking for an ecommerce site you can go for Magento or osCommerce. I assure you, these are very simple, have great community support & will work brilliantly for you. Ofcourse you will have to spend some time. So the very next thing is buy webspace & start working on refining the look of your site.

If you still have questions you can write to me in person: earthtechie[at]gmail.com. Thats enough from my side, you see i am a great guy :D , now give me the best answer ranking & do as i say :p …

    God Bless

    Mangal.

PS: Buy web space asap & start testing. It takes time to have a website you can offer your customers.

Unix is the traditional operating system and has been around for ages. It is the most reliable too, using memory and disk space efficiently. Although less user-friendly than Windows systems, for simple websites this isn’t a problem, as the only access to the Unix server is via FTP to upload the site (and don’t be misled: Unix will not clash with your windows system on your PC when uploading web pages!). For more advanced sites webmasters would need to become familiar with Unix commands.

Microsoft Windows is becoming popular with web developers. Recent advances in server technology provide high performance server environment, along with exceptional support for the developer with a single vendor (Microsoft) commitment to ongoing development.

Either will do for most sites. Hope this helps.
